Michael Praetorius, whose 400th anniversary of death is being celebrated this year, is one of the great shortfalls in music history. Berio & Striggio with Chorwerk Ruhr at Ruhrtriennale

At the Ruhrtriennale, Berio's "Coro" was heard with the great Chorwerk Ruhr which had joined forces with the Duisburg Philharmonic under the direction of Florian Helgath. [...] Helgath had positioned five groups of singers and instrumentalists in the hall: two at the back, with an almost bodiless sound, one in the gallery, one on the left, one in the middle. This resulted in a finely balanced sound mixture, which could increase into a luxurious mix. The sound was to be experienced as a fine cocoon: finely graduated, with room for carefully balanced individual voices. [...] A special experience was the "Agnus dei", in which the singers were split into 60 voices, as if the room were full of fine sound lines, performed with passion. Was einem hier entgegenschallt, ist repräsentative, geistliche Musik vom Feinsten […] Auch die dezente Instrumentalbegleitung auf historischen Instrumenten durch das Bläserensemble »Capella de la Torre« bereichert das Album und unterstreicht die Feierlichkeit der Musik. Mal werden die Instrumente mit entsprechenden Stimmen gekoppelt, mal kleinere Vor- und Zwischenspiele eingeschaltet. Album: Praetorius & Italy mit RIAS Kammerchor & Capella de la Torre

Michael Praetorius, dessen 400. Todestag man in diesem Jahr feiert, ist einer der großen Zu-kurz-Gekommenen der Musikgeschichte. „Man braucht echte Frühbarock-Spezialisten für ihn“, so Helgath zur Erklärung dieses Missstandes. […] „Verhindert hat seine Aner-kennung, dass man sehr alte Instrumente wie etwa Schalmeien, Dulzian, Pommer und Zinken für ihn benötigt – und nicht etwa nur eine schlichte Barock-Oboe.“ Dann aber entfaltet diese Musik eine ungeahnte und unvergleichliche Suggestiv- und Sogkraft. Man tritt über in eine andere Welt.
„Der Unterschied zwischen Praetorius und den Italienern, die er bewunderte und die wir auf diesem Album versammelt haben, besteht in seiner viel größeren Wort-Bezogenheit.“ […] Die Pointe von Praetorius besteht allerdings gerade darin, „diesen Grat des Wort-vorrangs zu verlassen“ (gemessen an Zeitgenossen wie Schein, Schütz und Scheidt). Praetorius, das ist der Witz an ihm, wird italienischer. […] Mit der neuen CD setzt sich der RIAS Kammerchor ein Denkmal absoluter Superiorität.

Das Ereignis der neuen Einspielung ist ohnehin die Interpretation durch das Chorwerk Ruhr und das Concerto Köln unter Leitung von Florian Helgath, der mit seiner ebenso inspirierten wie schlanken, energiereichen und ausdrucksstarken Gestaltung Bestmarken setzt. Brillant der Chor, der stets transparent klingt, dynamisch weit, aber ohne aufgesetzte Extravaganzen ausgreift und die melodischen Verläufe glasklar zum Klingen bringt. Florian Helgath setzt starke Akzente, behält aber immer Maß, entgleist nicht in Übertreibungen wie hochgejubelte Stars à la Currentzis & Co. Zusammen mit dem nicht weniger exzellenten Concerto Köln und einem ausgewogenen Solistenquartett verdient die Aufnahme einen Spitzenplatz in jeder Diskothek.

Besonders eindrucksvoll ist der beschwingte Rhythmus, den er im vierten Satz findet, und das Drama in der Darstellung des Jüngsten Gerichts im sechsten Satz. Berio & Striggio mit Chorwerk Ruhr bei Ruhrtriennale

Bei der Ruhrtriennale war Berios „Coro“ mit dem großartigen Chorwerk Ruhr zu hören, das sich unter Leitung von Florian Helgath mit den Duisburger Philharmonikern zusammengetan hatte. […] Helgath hatte fünf Gruppen aus Sängern und Instrumentalisten in der Halle postiert: zwei hinten, von denen ein beinahe körperloser Klang herüberdrang. Einer auf der Empore, einer links, einer mittig. So ergab sich eine fein austarierte Klangmischung, die sich ins Luxuriöse steigern konnte. Der Klang war als feines Gespinst zu erleben: fein gestaffelt, mit Raum für sorgsam ausgewogene Einzelstimmen.[…] Ein besonderes Erlebnis war das „Agnus dei“, in dem sich die Stimmen 60-fach aufteilen: als sei der Raum voller feiner Klang-Stränge, behutsam und doch leidenschaftlich musiziert.[…] Damit haben das Chorwerk Ruhr, Florian Helgath und die Duisburger Philharmoniker – wieder einmal für einen Glanzpunkt im Triennale-Programm gesorgt.

Memoria von Florian Helgath und Chorwerk Ruhr bei Ruhrtriennale

Florian Helgaths Plan, über die Vokalpolyphonie de Victorias die Suche der New Yorker Schule nach dem Klang an sich vorzubereiten, ist auf erstaunliche Weise aufgegangen. (…) Helgath arbeitet im „Offertorium“ an der Polyphonie des Spaniers Tomas Luis de Victoria und lässt den sechsstimmigen Chor herrlich wechselvoll erklingen. Ertönt das „Hosianna“ ganz groß und klar, nimmt der bewegliche Gesang des Chorwerk Ruhr in der Motette mit dem Moment persönlicher Trauer wieder zu. Im Maschinenraum wird ein Nachhall spürbar, und zum „Absolutio“ beherrscht der Chor ein vielstimmiges Ende, das das Spektrum des ausklingenden Tons zu einem Volumen anschwellen lässt, das einen ungeahnt erfüllt. Für Sopran, Alt, Tenor und Bass hat John Cage in Four 2 (1990) verschiedene Töne benannt, ohne die Dauer zu bestimmen. In gewissen Zeiträumen sollen die Sängerinnen und Sänger einsetzen, wie sie ihren Akkordton auch verschieden beenden können. Helgath hat Chorpaare im Publikum verteilt. Ihr Einsatz schult das Empfinden für das räumliche Gefühl der Illusion vom Tonursprung.(…)

In Morton Feldmans „Rothko Chapel“ (1971) erfährt man Momente, als ob der Ton erstmalig in die Welt entlassen wird. (…) Der Chor hält einen Ton, der immer umfassender wird, ja absolut erscheint. Es ist eine feine Konzentration entstanden, ein Erwarten.

Dies in der Maschinenhalle der Dortmunder Zeche Zollern, wo sich der Klang im Raum frei entfaltet, dabei stets greifbar bleibt trotz der enormen Dimensionen des Gebäudes. Das Chorwerk Ruhr unter Florian Helgath begeisterte seinerseits durch einen glasklaren Chorklang, hohe Gesangskunst und eine sagenhafte Wandlungsfähigkeit und Präsenz in Dynamik, Tongebung und Stimmfärbung.
