Chorwerk Ruhr is one of Germany’s leading chamber choirs. The flexibility of its solo line-ups, combined with the ensemble’s seamless blend in choral sound, are what define the distinctive quality of this vocal ensemble, founded in 1999.
The multi-award-winning conductor Florian Helgath has shaped Chorwerk Ruhr into an international ensemble of the highest calibre, both in the field of A cappella music and in the choral symphonic repertoire, whilst placing new choral music in the context of traditional musical forms at the forefront. The ensemble’s versatility is evident in numerous commissioned works and world premieres by renowned contemporary composers.
Chorwerk Ruhr cooperates with orchestras such as Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Berliner Philharmoniker, Concerto Köln, Ensemble Resonanz, Ensemble Modern, Schönberg Ensemble Amsterdam, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks as well as with conductors as Kent Nagano, Sylvain Cambreling, Adam Fischer, Reinhard Goebel, Susanna Mälkki, Peter Rundel, Hans Zender, Yuval Weinberg, Martina Batic, Kaspars Putniņš and Paul Hillier among others.
Upcoming highlights include performances at the Festival of European Church Music in Schwäbisch Gmünd and the Music & Church Festival in Brixen with Concerto Köln, followed by A cappella concerts in Tilburg, Groningen and Arnhem. The vocal group is scheduled at Konzerthaus Dortmund together with Rascher Saxophone Quartet.
Chorwerk Ruhr is a regular partner of the Ruhrtriennale festival.
The choir’s discography reflects its versatility and spectrum from Renaissance to contemporary music with works ranging from Gluck, Schumann and Schönberg to Rihm. Meanwhile seven albums by Chorwerk Ruhr and Florian Helgath are released with Brahms: A German Requiem, Mozart: Requiem, Bodenschätze: Motets of the 17th century with Capella de la Torre, Musikalische Exequien: Schütz, Kagel: Chorbuch, Brahms: Choir songs (Als ob mich Engel riefen) and Abendlob und Morgenglanz: Rachmaninow Vigil op. 37 for Coviello Classics.

Season 2026/27
Florian Helgath has established himself internationally as one of the leading choral conductors. Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of Chorwerk Ruhr and the Zürcher Sing-Akademie, has shaped the ensembles into top international choirs of the highest calibre, both with cappella music as well as in the field of choral symphonies.
From the 2027/28 season, he will take up the position of chief conductor of the Netherlands Radio Choir for a four-year term.
Florian Helgath is a regular guest with the RIAS Kammerchor, Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks, SWR Vokalensemble, NDR Vokalensemble, MDR Rundfunkchor Leipzig, The Norwegian Soloists' Choir, Netherlands Radio Choir, Choeur de Radio France, Gulbenkian Choir, Coro da Música Porto, Flemish Radio Choir and Croatian Radio Symphony & Choir.
He has also worked with orchestras such as the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Aarhus Symphony, Odense Symphony, Denmark Philharmonic, Stavanger Symphony, Brussels Philharmonic, Münchner Rundfunkorchester, WDR Funkhausorchester, Munich and Bochum Symphony Orchestra, Dortmund and Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Ensemble Resonanz, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Freiburg Barockorchester, Concerto Köln, B'Rock Orchestra and Orchestra La Scintilla of the Zurich Opera.
Florian Helgath also attracted attention on the opera stage with extraordinary productions. These include Heinrich Schütz / Nikolaus Brass Earth Diver with Chorwerk Ruhr and Muziektheater Transparant at the Ruhrtriennale and Philip Glass Einstein on the Beach at Theater Dortmund.
Further ahead are visits with Hungarian Radio Choir, Croatian Radio Choir, Coro de la Comunidad Madrid, Coro da Música Porto as well as a tour with the Orchestre National d'Auvergne and choir.
Florian Helgath's discography includes numerous highly acclaimed albums such as Carré/Chorbuch with Chorwerk Ruhr on the Coviello Classics label (Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik 2022), the album Geistliche Gesänge with works by J.S. Bach, Reger, Knut Nystedt with MDR Rundfunkchor (ICMA Award 2017) or Da Pacem: Echo of the Reformation with RIAS Kammerchor and Capella de la Torre (ECHO Klassik 2017). His latest album focuses on Frank Martin and Swiss composers of the 20th century with the Zürcher Sing-Akademie (Claves Records).
From 2009 to 2015 Florian Helgath conducted the Danish Radio Choir in Copenhagen and led the Via Nova Choir Munich from 2008 to 2016. With this ensemble he has conducted numerous world premieres and has been awarded international prizes.
Florian Helgath gained his first musical experience with Regensburg Domspatzen and at Hochschule für Musik und Theater Munich. Michael Gläser, Stefan Parkman and Dan Olof Stenlund were among his important teachers who had a decisive influence on his development as a conductor.
Other key milestones in his career included international successes as a prize-winner in competitions such as the Eric Ericson Award 2006, the Competition For Young Choral Conductors 2007 in Budapest and the Choral Conductors' Forum of Bavarian Radio 2007.
In 2020, Florian Helgath was appointed as professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne. Since 2024 he has been Professor of Choral Conducting at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Munich.
